Business automation: where to start
A practical guide to identifying what to automate first and avoiding the most common mistakes when introducing AI and automation.
Automation (with or without AI) can save hours of work, but the most common mistake is starting from the technology instead of the problem.
Step 1: map repetitive work
Before automating, inventory the tasks your team repeats every week: copying data between tools, generating reports, answering similar messages, updating spreadsheets. Those are your candidates.
Step 2: prioritize by impact
Not everything is worth automating. Prioritize tasks that are:
- Repetitive and frequent.
- Prone to manual error.
- Low strategic value (to free up the team’s time).
Step 3: start small
Automate ONE process, measure it for a few weeks, and adjust. A small win builds confidence and data to decide the next step.
Common mistakes
- Automating a broken process (fix it first).
- Automating something that almost never happens.
- Relying on AI without supervision for critical decisions.
Well-executed automation doesn’t replace people: it eliminates work nobody should be doing, so the team can focus on what actually adds value.
